It is said that you can either become a villain or die a hero. Christian Bale is now a villain again, this time in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is powerful, and the plot stays true to the comic book storyline as well. It also reintroduces the popular character of the audience, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Taika Waititi’s quirky humor is evident. And yet, Love and Thunder, despite being an efficient standalone movie, doesn’t match the previous Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his standalone films either missed the mark entirely or hit the nail on the head. While the origins tale of Thor (2011) was an okay start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a horrendous entry. And yet, anyone’s list of the top five MCU films would include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) without a doubt. The Return of the Hemsworth/Taika Waititi collaboration meant expectations were at an all-time high ahead of the release.
When Gorr (Bale) the god of war, who seeks the extinction of gods after having been let down by one, decides on striking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god butcher by joining forces with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has changed into Mighty Thor. The plot is straightforward unlike the recent Marvel films and the performances are exemplary in the film. Hemsworth aces the titular character who is going through an identity crisis. Bale and Portman stand out. As evidence of Bale’s abilities his pre-title credit scene stands. Gorr could be the next Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a mysterious aspect to the character , but there isn’t much else.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancer-afflicted exgirlfriend. Because of how Marvel seems to be eager to hand over the roles of Hawkeye and in a few weeks, Hulk, to women characters, I was expecting the Mighty Thor to be a similar tick mark on the representation check list. The film tells a heartwarming tale of an astrophysicist who can show her biceps in more than one.
Marvel also offers its own flexing through all the cameos. In addition to the whole Guardians of the Galaxy team, we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also seen as Hela as well as the director of an Asgardian play. Waititi who has since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, returns to his favourite genre once again. There are hilarious ideas like the noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s story, Thor making leg-splits, or Valkyrie being the brand ambassador for Old Spice…
The premise is that Thor desires his Mjolnir but is afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags are hilarious, however they’re also a source of deep emotions. They also expose the superficial plot. Thor: Love and Thunder covers a wide range of love, from a father-daughter bond to the complex romantic relationship of estranged lovers… It’s an analogy between Gorr losing respect for his god, Rapu, and Thor becoming disappointed with Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). These concepts are endless but…
There are many references to movies like Harry Potter and Interstellar, and also Easter eggs. There’s a photo of the god who died, Falligar, taken straight from comic books. We see Hemsworth putting on the original Thor costume that comic book readers will recognize. When Thor shows his true colors during the fight with Zeus We see a tattoo reading “RIP Loki and the helmet of the trickster permanently engraved on the back of our space-based Viking. Then we are introduced to the villainous Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to possess the ability to think for themselves and are able to control their own minds, it’s interesting to observe more weapons being shown to have the power to subdue the people.
This is what we saw the ten rings of ShangChi and Ms. Marvel’s dazzling bangle as well as the Ebony blade that was featured in the Eternals post-credits scene. After Marvel’s recent show, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but never allow you to be empowered” is extremely relatable. There’s also a little bit about Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend in the war and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
We’re reminded of the Ragnarok colour palette during the first part, but much of the second part is set in the dark world of black and white. The action scenes in monochrome can be very satisfying It is important to note.
Hemsworth will continue to play Thor Hemsworth will continue to play Thor, which is a welcome relief for MCU fans who’ve watched the first Avengers die or hang their heads.
